ADULT: Wingspan up to 35mm. The forewings of this morth are pale ochreous in colour and suffused with olive grey. Each forewing sports a distinctive bi-lobed brown patch. The reniform stignma is pale and the hindwings are pale grey with dark cell spots. BEHAVIOUR: The larvae overwinter and feed on Reed Canary-Grass and Reed Sweet-Grass. When the grass dies down late in the year the caterpillar hibernates underground and then re-emerges the following year to feed on new growth. It pupates in a cocoon in the leaf litter. Adults visit light and sugar. HABITAT: Found around fens, lake and pond margins, damp woodland and other marshy places. FLIGHT PERIOD: Adults seen from June to August. STATUS: A wideley scattered moth with a fair distribution over most of England, Wales and southern Scotland. |
